Crowns & Bridges
Crowns
A crown is a custom-made, tooth-shaped ‘cap’ placed over a tooth to improve its natural look. Crowns can replace the structure of the natural tooth crown – the part that’s above the gums.
You might need a crown to protect a tooth that is broken, or weak from being decayed or fractured. It can also support a large filling if there isn’t enough tooth left to hold the filling in securely.
Getting a crown is a common alternative to removing the tooth altogether. Read about tooth extraction.
A crown can be made from porcelain, steel, metal, resin and other material. Each one varies in cost and durability. But you look after your dental crown, it can last for many years.
Of course, a crown can be pricey, so we only recommend this option if no other treatment or procedure will get the results you need.
Bridges
While a crown is a cap that covers an incomplete tooth, a bridge can replace a missing tooth (or several teeth) altogether. These false teeth are permanently cemented to the natural teeth on either side of the gap.
If you have lost one or more teeth and feel a bit self-conscious, a bridge is a great way to get back your confidence and winning smile.
First we check the natural teeth and gum area for decay or problems, and then file down the natural teeth on either side of the gap.
We then create a mould for the bridge and fit the bridge into the space, cementing it to the other teeth. With proper care, your bridge can last you a very long time.
We can also consider a partial denture if you would prefer removable false teeth rather than a permanent bridge.
