Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is any treatment that improves the overall appearance of your teeth, gums and smile.

At Mount Druitt Dental, we give you only the best and most up-to-date advice about any concerns you have with the aesthetic appearance of your teeth, gums or jaw.

Here are just some of the cosmetic procedures we can offer. We can even do a ‘smile makeover’ – where we give you one or more of these cosmetic treatments to help give you the most confident smile.

Inlays and onlays

Dental inlays and onlays are partial restorations used to repair back teeth that have mild or moderate decay, cracks or fractures. An onlay covers a cusp of the tooth, while an inlay fills the area (cavity) between the cusps.

Inlays and onlays are custom-made using porcelain or composite material, and bonded to your tooth.

We might recommend an inlay or onlay – rather than a filling – if a tooth has too much damage or decay in the structure for a filling. This treatment allows us to protect more of your original tooth structure.

However, you need to have enough healthy tooth remaining to attach the inlay or onlay to. If you don’t, we would probably recommend a crown (cap) instead to cover what’s left of the tooth. Veneers

If you have an imperfect tooth that is reducing your smile confidence, you might need a veneer. A dental veneer is a custom-made porcelain or resin composite that is bonded to the surface of a tooth or several teeth.

The porcelain or composite is very thin and tooth-coloured, so it’s not noticeable. This small change can make a big difference to your confidence.

A veneer is ideal if you have any:

  • gaps between teeth
  • stained or discoloured teeth
  • broken or chipped teeth
  • crowded teeth
  • crooked, oddly shaped or misaligned teeth.

To do this procedure, we:

  1. gently sand the relevant teeth to remove any surface material
  2. give you a local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable during the procedure
  3. bond the veneer to the teeth.

While a veneer covers your whole tooth, you can also get composite bonding that covers only part of your tooth (e.g. for a particular stain or bit of damage). Either way, it doesn’t take very long and you’ll love the result!

Tooth polishing

Healthy teeth and gums can make a person feel more confident. But, over time, tooth enamel can turn dark and yellow, or stained due to food and drink, and smoking.

Our tooth polishing procedure involves smoothing and cleaning your teeth surfaces to remove stains and corrosion, and give you shiny teeth and a beautiful smile.

Our dentists usually include tooth polishing as part of a regular clean. We use an abrasive paste – like a gritty toothpaste – and a hand-piece with a soft spinning cup to polish your teeth and make them clean and smooth.

Can cleaning be painful?

Generally, people find our cleaning procedures to be pain free and love the smooth feel of their teeth afterwards.

However, sometimes exposed dentine or sore gum tissue can cause a little pain. If any part of our procedure causes you pain or discomfort, let us know immediately.
