Child receiving gentle dental check-up under CDBS at Mount Druitt Dental

Medically Reviewed & Clinically Authored by Dr. Erini, BDS, Principal Dentist at Mount Druitt Dental and Member of the Australian Dental Association (ADA).

Good oral health habits established during childhood lay the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles. To make essential pediatric dental care accessible for Australian families, the Australian Government provides the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) through Medicare.

At Mount Druitt Dental, we believe financial constraints should never stand in the way of a child’s dental wellbeing. That is why our clinic proudly bulk-bills all eligible CDBS treatments, ensuring zero out-of-pocket expenses or surprise gap fees for local families across Mount Druitt, Rooty Hill, Plumpton, St Marys, and greater Western Sydney.

What is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)?

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is a Commonwealth-funded Medicare initiative that covers a comprehensive range of basic and preventive dental services for eligible children.

  • Benefit Cap: Up to $1,095 in dental benefits per eligible child.
  • Benefit Period: Allocated over two consecutive calendar years.
  • Rollover Rules: Any unused funds from the first calendar year roll over into the second year, provided the child remains eligible.

Who is Eligible for the CDBS in NSW?

A child is eligible for the CDBS if they meet three key criteria:

  1. Age: Aged between 0 and 17 years for at least one day of the calendar year.
  2. Medicare Coverage: Eligible for Medicare benefits.
  3. Government Payment: The child, parent, guardian, or carer receives an eligible Australian Government payment at least once during the calendar year, such as:
    • Family Tax Benefit Part A
    • Parenting Payment
    • Double Orphan Pension
    • Youth Allowance
    • Disability Support Pension
    • ABSTUDY or Carer Payment

Not sure if your child is eligible? Call Mount Druitt Dental on (02) 9677 1172 with your Medicare card details, and our friendly reception team will check your child’s balance on the spot.

What Dental Treatments Are Covered Under CDBS?

The CDBS covers a wide spectrum of essential dental services designed to protect, restore, and maintain your child’s oral health:

  • Comprehensive Dental Examinations & Check-Ups: Thorough assessment of teeth, jaw development, and bite alignment.
  • Diagnostic Digital X-Rays: Safe, low-radiation imaging to detect hidden decay between teeth.
  • Professional Scale & Cleans: Removing hardened plaque and tartar to prevent gingivitis.
  • Fluoride Treatments: High-concentration topical fluoride applications to strengthen enamel.
  • Fissure Sealants: Protective resin coatings applied to deep molar grooves to prevent cavities.
  • Tooth Fillings: Tooth-colored composite restorations for decayed or chipped baby and adult teeth.
  • Root Canal Treatments (Pulpotomies): Saving infected baby teeth to preserve space for adult dentition.
  • Tooth Extractions: Gentle removal of severely decayed, broken, or crowded teeth.

Note: CDBS does not cover orthodontic braces, cosmetic dental work, or dental services provided in a hospital operating theater.

Frequently Asked Questions About CDBS

Does the $1,095 reset every year?

No. The $1,095 cap is allocated over a two-calendar-year period. If you do not use the full balance in year one, the remainder carries into year two as long as eligibility is maintained. If a new two-year cycle starts, a fresh cap is issued.

What happens if treatment exceeds $1,095?

If your child requires extensive dental work that exceeds the remaining CDBS balance, our dentists will discuss this with you before treatment begins. Any additional services can be managed via private health funds or flexible interest-free payment plans (Afterpay, Zip).

Can teenagers access CDBS?

Yes! Eligible teenagers up to the age of 17 are fully covered under the CDBS, which is especially useful for managing emerging wisdom teeth, cleanings, and preventive care.
